Even More Bad News for Microsoft OneCare

Previously I reported on how Microsoft Live OneCare was one of only four security applications that failed to receive certification in a field of 15 security apps. Now there's worse news: If OneCare finds a virus in your inbox, it might delete your entire email file. All of it. Wow.

Since Outlook stores email in a single, gigantic file (typically a .pst file), you can see how it happened: OneCare deemed the file to be contaminated, so it simply deleted the file. Not a good solution, no. I can assure you that I will never, ever, ever, ever install OneCare on any computer I own except for (brief) testing and on an isolated machine.

What makes this issue particularly loathsome is that the problem is actually a year old. Microsoft fixed it, then abruptly it happened again when a recent update was released.

Evidence continues to pile up over OneCare's incapabilities. Another independent test of 17 anti-virus applications [PDF link] found OneCare to be the only one that didn't pass the test, achieving no certification at all. OneCare scored an 82.4 percent detection rate, by far the lowest of the group, with specific weaknesses in a variety of areas. (It's worth noting that McAfee also barely scraped by in this test; it had failed the earlier certification mentioned above along with Microsoft.)

OneCare is bad, but is that symptomatic of Microsoft's impending doom? Check out this recent commentary called "Microsoft's meltdown," which justifiably asks if a lack of trust in Microsoft's products could be the beginning of the end for the company. I don't know if things are that dire, but I certainly haven't seen much good coming from the company lately.

Oh, and Microsoft's response to all of this? It put out a patch. Meanwhile, users are still complaining they can't recover their deleted email files...

Lack of trust in Micro$oft? Why? WGA maybe? Seriously, they may need to look into a different direction for the future. Perhaps their own open source OS. Or significantly cut the price of what they do offer. Linux is catching up, albeit they are still several laps down in the race. Charging more, adding restrictions, and not improving overall product usefullness do not add up to customer satisfaction. It adds up to helping your competitor. Some of the main attractions of Linux are the price and the fact that you can install it as many times as you want. Cut the price of XP down to something everybody can afford, re-issue the thing, trash Vista and start from scratch on the next one instead of trying to improve on something that you already know has flaws that will have to be patched. Get off this altar you put yourself on.

I've OneCare now for quite some time on both of my computers and just love the way it operates and had no problems of any sort with it. It seems to me there is some Microsoft bashing going on in this column without regard for Microsoft's true value for the average computer user.

Chris, excellent column. Thank you for keeping us informed of the developments in the technology sector. As the defacto IT person for my family, it is helpful to have information regarding these things. erichschmidt, are you kidding me! It failed two independent test from two different sources. It is not bashing to simply state the results of tests and question what might be the outcome or reasons.

I ran one care one my computer and lost several services including themes and system restore and can't find the backup files that were supposed to be created. I'll never use it again. now I have to backup all my files again and reinstall the operating system and hope it fixes the problem.
