Lifetime Service Transfer for HD TiVo Now Available

TiVo infamously killed off its lifetime service in 2006, but if you've been hanging on to an old TiVo with lifetime service on it, unwilling to upgrade to the Series3, high-definition TiVo because you don't want to pay a monthly fee, now you can have your cake and eat it too. TiVo will be letting users transfer old lifetime service agreements to new TiVos for a limited time, starting today.
There are restrictions, of course: You have to have activated your original lifetime service before October 1, 2003, and you have to buy a new TiVo from TiVo directly at http://www.tivo.com/HDservicetransfer (the web page is not yet active). The new TiVo will run you $300, then you can transfer your service for another $199. That's $500 for lifetime, high-def service, but if you plan to hang on to your TiVo for a while (mine's been going strong for years), that $199 pays for itself rather quickly: A one-year prepaid plan is $179. Of course you'll lose the lifetime service on your old Series2 TiVo, but if you're part of a one-TiVo family that's trying to tiptoe into HD, this might not be such a bad deal.
Don't be too put-off by the onerous restrictions on the deal. TiVo periodically revives lifetime service; the last time it did so was in July. Odds are good deals like this will come again.

I agree, TiVo is a waste of money. We have 2 HD DVR's and pay half as much for the service, plus, we got a deal where we only paid for one and got the other free with out new service.

Well, I disagree with you about which DVR is superior betweent DirecTV and Tivo. I am so glad that I saw this article, and I am going to call Tivo. We have an older Tivo that we bought with lifetime service. We have DirecTV and their top of the line DVR and I HATE THEIR INTERFACE AND THEIR REMOTE! Every time I use it, I am actually tempted to call DirecTV and tell them how I hate their remote and the interface! It is just awful and I cannot wait to see my old friend Tivo back on my TV. I really hate DirecTV's DVR system, and LOVE TIVOs. . to each their own.

Ditto - Tivo is FAR SUPERIOR... I've tried the DirecTV HD DVR for 4 months now, and I can confidently state that it SUCKS when compared to Tivo. I'm assuming those first two comments have never tried Tivo and hence have nothing to compare it with. I have both (DirecTV HD DVR and Standard Def DirecTV Tivo) and there really is NO comparison when it comes to functionality, ease of use, features (I really miss the dual live buffer featue where I can pause on show, switch to the other tuner, pause that show and then switch back! It seems small, but when it's gone you do miss it!)... you name it! And the recently deleted items folder... sheesh! If the new owners of DirecTV are hearing this, PLEASE BRING BACK TIVO ON MY DIRECTV!!!

Tivo, no thanks. i will stick with my DirecTV HD DVR. the best thing since sliced bread. $5.99 monthly fee and i am good to go. oh yeah, the box itself is leased for $250 (after rebate).
