TV Giants Form New Electronics Recycling Company

Panasonic, Toshiba, and Sharp—mortal enemies in the business world—have finally agreed on something: To take action against the mountains of e-waste being generated as people upgrade their tiny old TVs to the latest, jumbo-sized HD models.

To wit: The companies are forming a joint venture called Manufacturers Recycling Management Company, or MRM, which will offer services to equipment manufacturers on how to cost-effectively recycle old electronics. (Various states have laws coming on the books very soon requiring electronics companies to do exactly this. Minnesota's mandatory recycling law has already taken effect.)

The company has already signed agreements with a number of electronics makers; Hitachi, JVC, Mitsubishi, Philips, Pioneer, Sanyo, and Olevia are all planning to use MRM's services. More are likely on tap, assuming MRM's claims of being cost-effective pan out.

Cheers to Panasonic, Toshiba, and Sharp for being proactive in dealing with e-waste and not just focusing on who can make the biggest TV.

    My solution to getting rid of my CRT when I got a plasma? Gave it away on Craigslist. Got rid of it in like 10 mins.

    I just gave my old (2004) CRT to my sister when I got my new LCD... good turn around in general, as I didn't have enough inputs open on it and she now has a decent TV in her bedroom. while I now am a part of the HD boom of 2007-2008 (Bought the set on Dec. 29- so it's a bit of both really). Craigslist is a good idea though; I wonder how much I can get for an old truck?

    I wish the whole world comes up with a law compelling all Electronics manufacturers to have collection points in every capital city,for old obsolute components,which,left at dumpsites have ended up in the rivers,lakes,oceans and finally the human food chain,causing all types of cancers never seen before.Otherwise,the world is commiting suicide by polluting the original good God-given environment that was free from pollutants,such as lead,nickel,cadmium,etc.the list goes on.

    My advice, give it away on freecycle, craiglist, gumtree, or to someone else, if it still works and it is safe! It gives the item anthore rotation.
