Myspace: It's the site that everybody loves to hate... and yet, who doesn't have an account there?

In response to Myspace's ugly ubiquity, blogger Simon Owens cheekily declared January 30 to be International Delete Your Myspace Account Day, and the movement has legs. Why, I'm sure dozens of people will log on to formally abandon their stale, heinously ugly Myspace pages today, for a variety of reasons. I find myself agreeing with Owens' assessment of the site in his top 10 reasons to quit the site. Primarily, his first: The only reason I ever login any more is to delete spam friend requests. I use LinkedIn and Facebook pretty much exclusively now.

Of course, Myspace has also been implicated in some pretty nasty news stories of late, too.

While I doubt International Delete Your Myspace Account Day will have much of a profound effect on the behemoth website, which now boasts over 200 million members, it is at least instructive about the dangers and headaches of signing up for every site under the sun, only to later have to undo it all. Getting out of Myspace isn't all that easy, either. Fortunately, Owens offers step by step instructions on how to do it here.

As for me, nah, I'm leaving my page intact. Partly because I need it for periodic stories I write about Myspace. Partly because cancelling the languishing account just isn't worth the trouble. The only thing worse than Myspace, it seems, is trying to leave it.

I think we should have an International Delete Your Blog Because You Are Too Lazy To Post Day. Too many blogs with 5 insipid posts on it. You put them in your RSS Feeder and nothing new comes through.

the most common sense thing to do to solve this problem is throw the electric switch to off DAH

Personally I prefer MySpace to Facebook - Facebook seem to be more invasive in the my life and lifestyle than I want a site to be - my Facebook page is empty. But I do use LinkedIn - thats a great business tool!

Well, because of MySpace, some of our long lost family members were able to get hooked up. I understand the frustration. My very first blog says, "I hate MySpace."; and I said that for a lot of the reasons for deleting it. I won't be deleting my MySpace because I can go online any time and see what my granddaughters are up to. They are teenagers and visit MySpace quite often.

Hey, that's strange, I don't have a trouble on my Myspace account except no one viewing it, grr.

I just did it and it felt great. If young people spent less time creating and viewing the pages of "Hey, Look At Me, I'm on TV and Can Make an orse of Myself", our country might have a brighter future. Plus, it's owned by the evil Rupert Murdoch. I signed up to check out someone's private page over two years ago and have barely paid notice to this waste of time since. Oh, and yes, I do understand it has a few redeeming qualities, like checking out a band's songs and profile, learning about political candidates, and posting stuff to share with family -- all stuff, by the way, you can do nicely elsewhere on the Internet. Nonetheless, thousands upon thousands of MySpace addicts waste countless hours promoting and preening for false "friends".

I just about left myspace completely for all the reasons listed above. I think I found a site that is much better, though, nobody I know in real life has ever heard of it. (Stage6) Better than all social networking sites, and MUCH better than video sites like YourCrap (you get the message there, I believe?). the only thing I use myspace for is to get in contact with friends that I don't really see in person anymore... that's it.

I like my space, east to use and so far no spam hitted me yet, but if people having unknown friend list than myspace would to something about it, like spam filter or blocked unknown contacts etc.

I needed to delete my account for I have never been able to get pass the login site. Sure I if no one else knows my password yet they always say that it is wrong, then I'm locked out because I try to often to login using the password that I initiated. So shutting it down does me more good, for it is one less web page that I would have to visit.
