Hands-on Review: mobiBLU Cube2

I loved the mobiBLU Cube, which was just about the coolest MP3 player I'd ever laid my hands on, what with its impossibly small size (1-inch cubed and 18 grams of weight), next-generation OLED display, and impressive headphone jack that also works as the digital PC input via an included USB cable (which also charges the lithium-polymer battery). Whoa.

Well the Cube just got even better: The mobiBLU Cube2 is the exact same size as its predecessor but adds some even more awesome features.

Most notably, the screen is no longer monochrome but full color, which opens up some interesting possibilities. including the ability to display photos on its tiny 0.67-inch-diagonal display. You can even play videos on it. The miniature Cube2's battery will last for a whopping five hours of pint-sized video (or ten hours of music). Though I haven't tested the battery life claims, they're in line with my benchmarks from the original Cube.

Using the software included with the player, converting pics and video to the mini format is simple and pretty quick. Of course, this isn't anything you'd want to squint at for any length of time, but if nothing else it's effective as a novelty gimmick. Audio quality is top-notch: Music is loud, punchy, and has plenty of range. Even the included headphones (see below) are of reasonably high quality. My only complaint is the user interface: seven buttons which could have been more intuitive but, ultimately, get the job done.

The Cube2 is "podcast ready," comes in four colors and two versions, a 1GB ($100) and 2GB format ($120). You get a nifty headphone setup that doubles as a necklace, which makes it easy to take the Cube2 on and off when the mood strikes you. But there's only so much I can say, as the Cube2 is something to be beheld for its impossible smallness. Check it out in person: You might not believe your eyes.
