Massive BlackBerry Outage Strikes Again

BlackBerry addicts faced their second big outage in a year yesterday afternoon, when Research in Motion's wireless service went dark for three hours, from about 12:30 to 3:30 PM PST, angering millions.

RIM says no messages were lost during the outage, only delayed.

The outage was not nearly as severe as the one that occurred in April last year and which spanned more than 12 hours of downtime. April's outage was ultimately traced to a buggy software patch applied to RIM's server software. RIM has not determined or announced the cause for yesterday's downtime but says it has "a team addressing this issue in order to define the problem and prevent it in the future."

But while yesterday's downtime may have lasted only three hours, it may have distressed consumers far more than the 2007 outage because it occurred in the middle of the workday. In contrast, the 2007 outage took place largely overnight. As one user, quoted by the AP, said tellingly, "I don't know what happened, I don't care what happened. They need to save their excuses for someone who cares."

Ouch.

Service should be running smoothly this morning. BlackBerry users should need to do nothing to restore normal operation, but if anything seems off, turning off the radio, waiting a few seconds, then turning it back on is always a good way to kickstart your device into sending and receiving again.

Anybody who is concerned about a 3 hour Blackberry outage should be in rehab.

I talk to people face-to-face, or use a desk phone. For quick notes, I use the Organic Memo Pad- the back of my hand. Maybe I'm old fashioned- all I can say is, it works for me.

Remind me not to get dependent on a Blackberry. I want what I want when I want it, but if it cannot happen at just that second, I can deal with it. There are other ways of communicating with people (thank God) so the be-all-and-end-all is not Blackberry. Ev

I understand why people were worried about the outage. Blackberries are useful for quick correspondence. Still, I wouldn't want to worry myself over this news if it happened to me. No, I'd find another way to my e-mail such as through my laptop.

I don't even use a blackberry but I've been having messaging problems for two weeks and what is bad is when you send someone a message at a normal respectable time like 3pm & the system is messed up and they don't get it til 2am while they are trying to sleep!

I used to have a blackberry, and I became so addicted to it that I would basically run my whole life on it, then I lost it...it really felt like I lost a limb. Now I just have a regular cheap cell phone, and I couldn't be happier. Sometimes we just get WAY too dependent on technology. Oh, and by the way, 6 months ago I would have been one of those people freaking out about my blackberry being down for 3 hours too :)

Three hours. Three hours! C'mon, people, get a life! You still have a phone. You still have a computer with e-mail that works. It's a freakin' Blackberry, for God's sake... Is Blackberry going to be sued now by someone whose life was ruined in those three hours?
