Angry eBayers, peeved that the option to ding bad purchasers with negative feedback have been stripped from them (among other gripes), launched a boycott on February 18th in an attempt to get eBay's attention and get the policy reversed. To everyone's surprise, that boycott looks like it might be having some effect.
According to medved.net, which keeps a running tally of the number of auctions running at any given time on the site, total listings have plummeted from 14.5 million on Monday to about 12.7 million (see chart above) as of the time of this posting. (eBay doesn't offer this information publicly.) That's significant (representing a 14 percent drop), especially since typical eBay listings begin to ramp up on Wednesdays and on toward the weekend instead of heading south.
That said, auction listings are subject to myriad vagaries: There's just no telling what might be affecting listings on a day to day basis, but such a steep drop like this doesn't happen often. Total listings, however, are still well up over the year's January 4 low of 11 million, which is historically the lowest things get until May arrives, bringing with it summer auction doldrums as sellers head out on vacation. It will likely take a sustained drop in sales for eBay to take notice of the boycott and concede a policy change. For its part, eBay has said the boycott "hasn't had an impact" and that it was "too early to speculate" on whether the boycott would have any long-term effect.
Meanwhile, angry eBayers are stepping up the action. Many are calling for a second week of boycotts, starting February 25. Their goal: Get total listings to bottom out below 10 million. We shall see.

14% is just the beginning. It will go below 11 million by Monday easily at this rate.
Now, hold on there eledgreg1. I have been tracking these stats since Feb 14th. And as of the evening of Feb 20th, ebay has lost over 20% of it's auctions. These are recorded by medved.com who is the go to place for accurate ebay stats. 15,900,000 - Feb 14th the auction count 12,700,000 - Feb 20th the auction count as of 10:00pm CST Ebay listings are down by 3,200,000 auctions or 20.13% Now over 2 million auctions down. Sell through stats in the last 3 days dropped from 54% to 47% so I believe that's a drop of 12.96% There is no indication that the numbers will rise, there is every indication that they will continue to tank over the next few days. It's good to know the facts before making assumptions about the boycott impact.

Sorry about the multiple posts, I hit post just once and look what happened.
eledgreg1 is exactly right. this is typical for an end of an ebay promotion
elecgreg1 is absolutely correct. Before the .20 cent listing day (last mon and tues) the auction counts were only 12.2 million. After the listing sale they skyrocketed up to over 17 million. Most of the sales all ended today and the listings have come down to 12.7 million. Still higher than before the sale. I am hoping tomorrow there is a steep drop below 12 million. That will show there is some effect from the boycott as I really hope the boycott works but so far I don't see alot of action. The boycotters should NOT have listed on the .20 cent day. Others (boycotters) listed things for sale BEFORE the boycott and to go off AFTER the boycott so that hurts the listing counts also for those hoping to see them go down.
they are still falling dramatically sorry but if they drop to 11 million or below ebay will be in dire straits as they will know the boycott is having a effect as for me i have left ebay they will not get 1 penny from me ever again mr doh no hoe just don`t know how much this as gotten to many sellers maybe he should listen to the people who pay his massive sallary dave now a full time ebid.net member and much happier

Although I'm not in any way a fan of the announced changes, MedVed's Reoprted drop in Listings is nothing more than an natural result of a Listing Promotion from 7 days earlier. Since most Auctions run for 7 days, those that started on the Promo day last Wednesday, ended on the 20th. The natural result is a large dropoff in listing totals. The true test will be a contimuation of that plunge through the 25th. If the total gets anywhere near 10 million listing, then the effects of a Boycott will be apparent.
