American Airlines is so deeply troubled (compounded by the crushing effects of inflated oil prices) it's now come to this: You'll have to pay 15 bucks to check your first piece of baggage when you choose it to fly the increasingly hostile skies.
This week American said it would axe about 12 percent of its flight schedule, layoff an undetermined number of workers, and retire some 50 planes (which had already been grounded for faulty wiring). The $15 bag fee comes on top of all of that and appears to be the only change the airline is making to actually generate more revenue.
The move comes a mere matter of days after many airlines put into place their plans to charge extra (usually $25) for a second checked bag. United's plan, announced in February, went into effect on May 5. As expected, other airlines rapidly jumped on that bandwagon shortly thereafter.
As yet, no other major airline has followed American in its first-bag fee scheme. The rest of the industry is probably just waiting to see if travelers start rioting in the terminal. Naturally, many expect that flyers will simply resort to trying to jam more luggage into the overhead bins in order to try to beat the fee.
Maybe a spot of good news for travelers: These fees are getting high and pervasive enough that they've raised the interest of the government, which says it will soon begin requiring airlines to disclose bag check fees in advertising and during the ticket buying process.

For Budget Airlines, the extra charges for checked in bags is one of the approaches they employed to discourage passengers from carrying too many and too heavy bags. Thus, the plane will be lighter and fuel consumption will be reduced.
American Airlines is the now officially THE worst airline. It used to easily be one of the best. With their continual delayed and canceled flights and aircraft maintenance problems.. then coupling that with this ponzi baggage scheme, it's time to choose other airlines and let AA finally go out of business. Bye Bye American.. was nice flyin' you, but you need to go the way of Pan Am.
AA was NEVER a great airline! Maybe in the 50's. As a traveling musician, AA, United, and Deltaare the worst and have been for the past 15 years. I hope they go the way of Eastern,Braniff,Piedmont, etc. Especially Delta and United. They always give musicians grief about carrying thier(reasonably sized) instruments in the cabin. Good riddance. Shouldn't someone be working on transporter technology now?

Well I HAVE NOT BEEN ON A FLIGHT FOR A WHILE. BUT I CAN UNDERSTAND. THEY HAVE TO DO WHAT THEY HAVE TO DO. THESE GAS PRICES ARE SO OUT OF HAND. WHO DO WE BLAME. EVERY TIME I GO TO GET GAS OR GROCERIES.SO THEY ARE TRYING TO MAKE IT LIKE WE ARE. THINK OF WHERE THE PLACES WE WORK I AM SURE COST IS GOING UP THERE AS WELL. I WORK AS A NURSE IN HOSPITAL. AS A NATION WE WILL MAKE IT. SO PLEASE DO NOT GET MAD AT THE AIRLINES OR THE CLERKS FOR THEY ARE JUST DOING THEIR JOB. WHO THE GOVERMENT......I AM THEY HAVE A GAS CARD?? ANYWHY HAVE A GREAT DAY AND LOVE YOUR FAMILY AND PRAY FOR OUR MEN AND WOMEN OVERSEAS. SO I CAN WRITE THIS AS FREE WILL. FROM KANSAS CITY, MO
That's just ridiculous. People do anything for money, even when it comes down to just plain stupid. This will surely hurt their business, as there's going to be others out there avoiding AA b/c of extra charges that aren't necessary. Our country is so dependent on other countries to function we're going out of our minds when one is taking advantage of us. We need to STOP completely using gas/diesel fuels and switch over to something else NOW so our economy can go back to normal. http://ExecutiveHomeBody.com
stick to tech, not transport.
Charges are charges - As a long-time loyal multimillion mile American traveler, I am annoyed. Don't usually check bags - why not charge $25 more per ticket as a fuel surcharge or call it an "oil price offset?" Economics are pretty simple revenues must exceed expenses to equal profit. All airlines are trying to figure this one out. I actually think airlines should charge a fee for CARRY-ONS! 1 bag fitting under the deat - $0; bag into overhead - $25.00! It would definitely speed up everything from security to boarding.

First-bag fee scheme???____ I have to say I have trouble comprehending peoples lack of understanding of simple economics. Fuel costs are exploding and companies that have a large portion of their expenses tied to these costs need to do what is necessary to survive. _________ To call this a scheme is not only inaccurate it's nearly slander._____A scheme infers that someone is is not disclosing or is misrepresenting the facts. That certainly is not the case here.______WORDS MEAN THINGS, please chose them wisely. ______As long as we live in a capitalist free market economy you have the choice to go to other airlines who don't charge this fee and will make up their increasing overhead in another way that may be more to your liking.
