Good news for those considering a new cellular contract: Verizon Wireless will be prorating early cancellation fees if you decide to break your contract before it's up.
That means that if you leave Verizon with one month left on your two-year contract, you will no longer have to pay a huge $175 early termination fee but rather a mere $7.30 instead.
In theory, anyway. The new fee system will only apply to new customers (beginning in the fall) or existing customers who sign a new contract with Verizon.
The AP story also notes that if you spend $50 a month forĀ 12 months, you'll also be eligible for a discount on an upgraded phone, rather than having to pay the full retail price for it.

Probably not. Very few people consider the cancellation fees when subscribing. That's akin to considering your potential divorce settlement when you're about to get married (Hollywood icons notwithstanding). Pro-rating the fees would also mean that carriers would need to maintain a competitive edge thereby setting themselves up to incur even greater costs.
About time!
I look at the term fees because it is easy to get disatisfied with services and plans when another competetor has a better offer. I think its great but honestly I am happy with verizon services but would love a new phone upgrade.
I am POed right now cause Verizon will not let me upgrade my phone. I want the BB 7250 you can get online at their store for $99. I was told I could not upgrade until Dec of this year or that I can pay full retail for it. Cough cough $449(in store)...I DO NOT think so. I am even upgrading my service contract from $40 to $80 and willing to sign another 2 year contract. I asked the sales guy what do they do to try and keep customers like me who might switch service companies for a better phone. He shrug and said "nothing." Just pathetic and total lack of business commensense.
I had the same experience as trent_duke. I wanted more minutes, was willing to pay for it and a better phone. Am 5 months out and the say too bad, sign another contract, but still pay full price for the phone AND get extended for a year. Verizon SUCKS! Never sign a contract just for the phone. Can get better plans elseware after researching them. could have save a bundle. Come November, goodbye verizon FOREVER!
Currenhtly i have 8 cell phones with verizon but only 7 are in full funtion. My husband lost his phone and verizon is telling that his only option is to buy a new one at full price because his u-pgrade is not due yet. I am extremely disatisfy and currently cosidering terminating the c0ontract and pay the early term9ination fees for all of the phones. Verizon should allow customers to buy phones at promotion price as long as they are with the company longer thana year. As we all know verizon's phone cannot be use in another company and vice versa. What is being a VIP customer when the treatment really sucks????????
Verizon does not prorate their termination fees, as of July 10, 2007. I am trying to negotiate with verizon to have this fee removed. Jeff
