It's true what they say about observing the creation of sausage and lawmaking.
Deep in the bowels of Senator Chris Dodd's new 630-page housing Bill, which is an attempt to address the housing crisis by refinancing and buying out subprime mortgages, lies a provision that will require a variety of companies to report electronic sales to the government. According to FreedomWorks, the Bill features a new addition (slipped in last week with no debate) that will require every credit card company and online payment system (including eBay's Paypal) to report transactions to a government-managed database. In other words: The government may soon be able to know every book, movie, piece of clothing, and, really, anything else you purchase unless you pay for it with cash.
Scary? You better believe it.
With the Bill passing the Senate banking committee by a huge vote of 19 to 2, it's expected to pass the Senate and head to the President's desk in relatively short order. There may however be a surprise hero: Bush has unexpectedly threatened to veto the Bill, which it's said he perceives as an expensive and irresponsible bailout. (The veto threat has nothing to do with the spying provision.)
Dodging a bullet? Sounds like it, but it shouldn't have to happen this way, should it?
What I really don't understand is what Dodd is doing behind this nonsense. Dodd was one of the few Congressmen who stood up against the telecom retroactive immunity legislation that's been wending its way through Congress this year. Dodd managed to stop the original Bill in its tracks a few months ago through a filibuster, but, in a bizarre coincidence, the revised version of that Bill just passed the House and is likely to be approved by the Senate next. Isn't Dodd supposed to be a hero of the common man? What the heck is going on?

Since the Feds will have all this data, then under Freedom Of Information I want a web page listing EVERY PENNY spent by our elected officials. Available for local, state, and federal officials. Searchable by name, and / or government position. You can call the web page "Watching the watchmen" or "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes"
If Dodd was a republican, there would be alot more comments posted. This story was up since yesterday. This should alert people to take care when voting and keep a careful eye on what our elected officals are doing.
Well! We- all immigrants from all over the world- probably drag with us those government's absurds - we thought left behin, to find out, that is no escape from any government. Governments execute a power, because they belive in such. Until a citizens do not gain faith in own power- government will go crazy farther. Read history of the World!
Christopher Dodd is a corrupt and a moron. I doesn't what the heck he is doing. By the way, he is an FOM, friend of Angelo. That says it all.
He's a Democrat, what do you expect? Tax, tax, tax. Government in every room of your house, every corner of your life. It scares me to think I'm going to see the ruin of this country in my lifetime. Avalon13
Once again Big Brother has figured out another way to track our every movement. What they don't understand is the American people are getting really short tempered and the last time this happened they revolted(The Boston Tea Party). If we don't get this nonsense stopped we will all be wearing microchips just like we use to keep track of our animals. As far as where is the TV news reports. Still in washington with the press which is only there to spread the Bush propaganda and not there to serve the american public. The U.S. government is no better than the Russian government
How is this going to help bail out the housing crisis? How is knowing every transaction we make on line going to help the housing crisis recover? It sounds more like an invasion of privacy for all? What? Are we going to be charged sales tax later or something? Sounding more and more like Armageddon. I don't have any tattoos and I don't want any chips under my skin either!!
It would be great if someone would start a campaign to discourage this bill from passing and future legislation of this sort.
I agree with Alan_r_cam, we should be permitted to know where the government is spending the obscene amounts of money they take from us.heck they don't deserve any more of our taxes until they can start managing the money taken from us much much more efficiently.By their own admission they have lost over 9 billion dollars (unaccounted for)in this illegal war,yet in the same breath have the audacity to come and bang on our doors to demand more of our money from us and yes are going to have a lot of those funds go unaccounted for.So now by having the ability to know our every credit card expenditure, I believe is somehow tied into taxes and tightening the noose on tax evasion, cause heck they need to keep us down and hungry always in search of more money while they squander billions on our "defense". Hah Hah Hah, who is the U.S. afraid of?

Just another example of the Democrat congress in action. If it wasn't for the Republican filibusters and the Presidents vetoes we wouldn't recognize this country anymore! ________Who voted for these bozos? Throw the bums out!
