Sony: Microsoft considering Blu-ray for Xbox 360

Rumors of a Blu-ray drive—or even built-in Blu-ray—for the Xbox 360 have been floating around since HD DVD bit the dust, but now a Sony exec confirms that Microsoft has, indeed, been thinking Blu thoughts.

According to the Financial Times, Sony Electronics U.S. president Stan Glasgow says both Sony and Microsoft have been discussing bringing Blu-ray to the Xbox 360. Talks are also underway with Apple, Glasgow said.

Microsoft won't confirm the FT report ("We have made no such announcement")—but that's not exactly a flat-out denial, either.

Now, as I've said before, Blu-ray makes a lot of sense for Microsoft and the 360—and as the FT points out, even Sony, maker of the competing PlayStation 3, would stand to make a tidy profit by licensing Blu-ray technology to Microsoft.

Assuming the purported Sony/Microsoft talks come to fruition, we might end up with a version of the Xbox 360 with a built-in Blu-ray drive, although I think a more likely option would be an add-on deck, a la the now-discontinued Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on.

Here's my little request, though: how about a Blu-ray add on that lets you daisy-chain an old 360 HD DVD drive? Yes, it would be an unwieldy setup, but it would be a nice touch for those of us with HD DVD collections (and just how long will we have to wait for the "Matrix" trilogy to go Blu-ray, anyway?).

OK, 360 gamers: you want built-in Blu-ray for the Xbox, or would you rather have the choice of an add-on drive?

I would buy a blue ray add on drive or better yet a new xbox 360 with a built in Blue ray drive as soon as they were released!! I have almost purchased a PS3 for just this reason but like the games on xbox much better. An Xbox 360 with a large drive (500G) and a built in blue ray would be my perfect machine!

I would much prefer a built in blu-ray. The 360 is big enough without adding any more pieces to it. I think the add-ons just look and feel cheap. The technology is obviously there so use it already. And if the blu-ray is built in they should be able to rig it so that people who bought the HD add-on can still use it if they want to. I've been waiting forever for Microsoft to get moving and produce teh 360 with blu-ray built in.

I think most likely they will do BOTH an add on and a built-in version at some point. It only makes since in that for the "few" million current 360 owners, a built-in only model is not going to make them switch, unless they could get it at current 360s prices. I mean some have already bought up to two machines because of the RROD. I feel if I were going to have to buy a new machine to get blu ray, I would get a PS3 just to get a chance to play the exclusive titles. But give me the chance to add one on to my current 360 and I am all over it!

I would buy a 360 right away if it had Blu-Ray in it.Seems like its just a money game for now until Sony and Microsoft work out a deal.I would suspect having the drive built in would raise the base price of the 360.Whether or not Blu-Ray becomes an option or standard equipment on future the future 360, who knows?

I think the add-on for the 360 is alot more feasible than the built-in option. I tallied with idea of getting the HD DVD add-on and I a glad I did. Even though I thought the format would last longer than it did.

i think MS should give a free blu ray add on to cusomers who are on there 5th (or more) 360. what a machine at only a 20% fail rate. how many does that work out to?

addon daisy chain would look fun... but a built in combo HD DVD/blu-ray drive would be even better...
