Genius is a good idea if you want to make a quick play list based off a song and you wanna have a similar theme to the play list but as a whole it is not that impressive in my opinion. As for the grid i like it better than cover flow. I have almost 1000 songs on my laptop and cover flow lags the whole thing up but the "grid system" manages the songs and albums quite well.
I have had about the same experience with it as you.
I'm dubious about Genius, iTunes can't even identify cover art correctly for a lot of albums. How's it going to identify genres and "moods" of songs that are admittedly obscure, but are still widely listened to? The worst on the automatic cover art identification is that some Zeppelin albums come up with that awful Dred Zeppelin cover! I am looking forward to the grid view though, so I'll probably upgrade this weekend.
Genius failed to recognise most of my library too, but the bulk of my library is from CDs and I don't tend to fill in all information, just Song, Album and Artist names and Year. In the album name I tend to put the year in brackets (eg "Album Name (2008)"), so maybe that's not helping the Genius thing?? I hope it improves though, it's a good idea, if it gets to a point where it works well. I already get a lot of music from the iTunes Store's "Just for You" feature, so Genius seems like a logical extension of that.
I don't care what people say, I still think Winamp is still the best overall audio player for the internet. I think Windows Media sucks more than anything, but good for videos. Even with Winamp, I'd still use my iPod.
I dunno. I made a genius playlist based on Rhett Miller's "Come Around" and it worked nearly flawlessly (ok, there were a few songs that didn't seem to fit genre, but i just deleted them from the list and refreshed)
This is really cool if you just want to group a bunch of songs based on your mood. If you want to listen some mellow music, click on a mellow song and let genius build a playlist of mellow songs. Yes, it's not perfect, but it's a lot easier for me to delete a handful of songs from a genius playlist, than to click and drag the songs I want to a playlist I build myself....The possibilities are endless!
Okay, I have over 6,000 songs on my iTunes. I'm interested in how well this will work out for me. I'll try it.
first and formost the new design of the album covers in a grid i like. how ever the Genius is not a genius at all in fact it put in a song i hardly listen to and made a play list out of.it tells me i need to buy songs that are on the cd that it says i have. wow im totalley impressed (not). over all it is about the same as the old version. with the exception of the play list format.and an improvment that apple should make is the cover art i have had to add most art myself i find it on there sight but it dont seem to know what my cd is. apple you can do better than this i hope.

It seems like the cloud should and will benefit from more users. For example, with Genius not recognizing your classical or electronic music - I'm sure due to the unpopularity and obscurity, it would make sense for you to get more hits when more people with your taste participate with the program. I happen to rank my electronic (House) as a favorite with jazz, but I do have a lot of classical as well. I'll update iTunes in a couple hours; perhaps you should try Genius again and see if my contribution to the cloud doesn't help you out with recommendations. I have a feeling that the cross comparing/recommendations should improve as time goes on.
