The early DTV transition test in Wilmington, N.C. went ahead as planned Monday. But while the FCC's community outreach worked just fine—most viewers were well aware of the analog shutoff—many residents discovered that their old antennas weren't up to the task, or that they weren't using their DTV boxes properly.

No. If you have cable with or without a cable box you will not be affected. The cable company processes all the signals before it sends it to you. The transition is only for people who use antennas to get local broadcast television.
Kill your TV, read a book, go for a hike!
Is the antenna issue really what they make it out to be? They make these really expensive "DTV" antennas and push people into buying them and tell them that rabbit ears won't work. I think it's a bunch of crap. When I got my HDTV with a built-in tuner, I just hooked up a small, cut-off peice of coax cable to it (about 6 inches long) to test it and I was able to get every digital channel tuned in. That certainly is lesser quality than rabbit ears. I then tried rabbit ears and it worked just as well. When nothing was hooked up, that's when I couldn't get any sigals. I think just about ANY antenna would work with these DTV boxes and don't be fooled by these expensive ones they are pushing at you. Test your old antennas before wasting your money!
I did forget to mention that I do live within 10 miles of all the broadcasting stations. If you live far out, you could potentially have problems with just using a 6-inch piece of coax as an antenna :)
Out here in Redding CA I have been watching digital broadcast TV since the superbowl. It's great. I love the dolby 5.1 sound. I run it through my home stereo system. I use an old set of rabbit ears to receive HD stereo TV. This the best thing since color TV.
Well the american public get (*******) again, when will goverment stop ordering private business to do things "for the good of the public", this HDTV is becoming a nightmare, let analog die its own natural death after broadcasters find that there is only about 2 to 3% of anaolog recivers on thier field of broadcast, because gradually the anaolog tv will die thier own natural death and there will be only HDTV units to buy.
hows come my posts never show up.
I have this problem with my antenna. Antennaweb says I can get 1 station, and I do get 1 station (in digital). I get about 9 analog stations. I live 40+ miles from a broadcast tower from Louisville. Antenna's will make or break your reception if you are any distance from the towers at all. This isn't about watching American Idol as some have suggested. This is about receiving detailed information about potential severe weather threats in the area, jail excapes, boil water advisories, etc. At 40+ miles, rabbit ears just can't do it. (But I do get very good reception with rabbit ears on VHF on analog.)
Wondering why we are not getting the signal thru the converter box for channel 12 here in Redding, Ca since they have brodcast that they have switched over to HD? We are getting channel 24, 9 thru the converter box. If anyone out there knows what to do to get channel 12 signal thru the converter box please reply. It would be much appreciated.

If you use cable directly into a cable ready tv without a box will the transition still affect you?
