A new (and unauthorized, of course) piece of software developed by a team of hackers will let you use the iPhone with any SIM, not just AT&T's, according to Engadget.

The blog reports that the coders at iPhoneSIMfree.com called Engadget editors and walked them through the unlocking process, which requires a software app that the team has yet to release on the Web. The Engadget bloggers say the installation took just a few minutes, and that once competed, they were able to make calls on their test iPhone with a T-Mobile SIM card. Practically every iPhone feature was still working, according to Engadget, save Visual Voicemail. Sure, it may all sound a little fishy, but Engadget has a bevy of screenshots and videos backing up the story.

So, how can you unlock your own iPhone, you ask? First of all, the hackers behind iPhoneSIMfree.com haven't released their code yet, and it's not clear when they plan on doing so. Also, even if you do get your hands on the unlocking software, you'll almost certainly void your warranty in the process, so do it at your own risk. Still, if you've been chomping at the bit to get an iPhone but don't want to sign a contract with AT&T, your lucky day may be fast approaching.

it shouldnt be limited to one carrier. cellphone carriers are the worse part of mobile communication. they are very conservative in what they allow and do not allow us to do on these devices. and the idea of making phones on a carrier exclusice basis is just absurd. i like t mobiles rates, their coverage and i have been with them for many years. instead of the iphone i get stuck with a freekin blackberry pearl YUCKY. i work in the mobile biznass too, so there

Two Wrongs Don't Make A Right! If AT&T lawyers taka anyone to court they will be pleasently surprised to find they will lose. It is illegal for a cable company to only give service to only those who own a Sony television or for a company to only sell detergent to folks who only own a Maytag washer. We have laws in this country to prevent lawyers employed by AT&T to force consumers to purchase a specific brand. Those lawyers will open a door that will shut them down.

Why we have monopoly of cellphone provider or carrier provider like this in USA?? Is it not a "MONOPOLY"? why we all went against Microsoft not going against AT&T and Apple?

I personally think it's great that the iPhone is unlocked. I've been dying for an iPhone and very much have the money for one but I don't want to settle for AT&T. They're ridiculous!! They want $600 for the iPhone itself(which is ok considering the phone does so much) plus another $300-$400 for the deposit!! AT&T is not all that and i think Apple should just open their doors to other companies. They'll sell more making themselves more money and as for the people, we'll have a choice.

Black and Decker can't lock my toaster so it will only work with TXU Electric. so Apple/AT&T can't legally lock a device to only work with their service. Microsoft can't lock PCs to only work with Internet Explorer...
