Apple: iPhone app store is a porn-free zone

Want to gaze at topless babes on your iPhone? Well, you'll have to look somewhere other than the App Store—or at least, that's Apple's policy.

An Apple spokesman told CNN's SciTechBlog (via Fortune's Apple 2.0) that iPhone porn apps—such as "Hottest Girls," which grabbed headlines yesterday after adding topless photos to its collection of cheesecake photos—are a definite turn-off for Cupertino.

"Apple will not distribute applications that contain inappropriate content, such as pornography," Apple's Tom Neumayr said, according to CNN.

"Hottest Girls" was already an approved iPhone app prior to yesterday's flap, but it only served up relatively tame pin-ups before Thursday.

The "17+"-rated app mysteriously disappeared later in the day, but the developer initially denied that Apple had pulled it, explaining that it was merely "sold out."

Well, not quite, said Apple's spokesman (via CNN), who dinged the "Hottest Girls" developer for adding "inappropriate content directly from their server after the application had been approved and distributed ... this was a direct violation of the terms of the iPhone Developer Program."

Of course, there are still plenty of risqué iPhone apps in the App Store if you know where to look, so I'm betting that Apple's no-porn policy will be something of a cat-and-mouse game.

In any case, check out this post for instructions on how to enable parental controls on the iPhone.

Meanwhile, what do you think: Should adult content be allowed in the App Store? Or should Apple keep it clean?

with parental controls, apple should not be restricting the apps to "family friendly" content, apple should start an adults only apps page so that adults who want that type of content can download it, it is our right to download anything we want on to our iphones!!!!!

It shouldn't have been pulled especially since the 3.0 software update with parental controls was added.

I doubt Apple wants to associate their product with the merchandizing and dehumanizing of women as objects to be consumed. Apple does not need to go that route to sell their technology. It sells itself without using primitive methods to attract attention.

It's fine that Apple won't sell porn in the iTunes Movie Store - it's a market and prouct selection choice, and those who want porn can get it somewhere else. But since the App Store is the ONLY legal place to get iPhone/iPod Touch apps, I don't like Apple's limitation and "approval" of apps. It's too close to censorship. Apple can't say "go somewhere else to buy content that we don't agree with" when they are the only source out there. Once other phone's app stores start allowing more content, I bet Apple will too.
