Apple Event: $200 Price Cut for 8GB iPhone

If you've been sitting on the fence about snapping up an iPhone, now may be the time to strike. Apple just announced a $200 price drop on the 8GB iPhone, effective today.

The 8GB iPhone will now retail for $399, compared to the steep $599 premium that early adopters (myself included) shelled out on launch day. Meanwhile, the 4GB iPhone (which is no longer listed on the Apple Store) will go on sale for $299 "while supplies last." With rumors of a stripped-down, low-cost iPhone in the pipeline, it makes sense that Apple would see fit to phase out the 4GB iPhone (which hasn't sold nearly as well as its bigger 8GB brother).

Update: I originally reported that the 4GB iPhone would keep its $499 price tag, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense, given that the 8GB phone is just $399—and indeed, I was wrong. My bad.

And another update: Steve Jobs just posted an open letter on Apple's Web site, offering a $100 Apple Store credit to anyone who bought the iPhone at the original price. It's not quite $200 in cash, but it's something.

They did drop the price of the 4GB iPhone to $299. I just stopped by the Apple store, and though the iPhones aren't labeled with the new price, the price has dropped on both models. If you're thinking about buying one, make sure you ask for the new price.

Great. now to hold the price drop over my iPhone-obsessed friend. he never stops showing it off, and I told him last time we talked about it that in about a month the price will have been dropped to make more sales. that was 5 weeks ago. I was right. Now I think I'll get the 160 gig model so I can ACTUALLY put all my media on it. 40 gigs of music, 10 gigs of pictures, and 85 gigs of movies all on my iPod... I'd never be able to stop listening.
