So it's finally official: the new Zunes are coming in November, and as expected, we'll have three versions: 4GB and 8GB flash-based players, and an 80GB hard drive version that's slightly slimmer than the first 30GB Zune. Also new: a revamped Marketplace with DRM-free tunes, wireless syncing of your music and podcasts (now that's cool), and automatic transfers of recorded shows from Windows Media Center.

First, let's take a quick look at the hardware. The two flash players are roughly the size of the iPod Nano, with the 4GB player going for $150 and the 8GB for $200 (same price as the new Nanos). The flash Zunes will be available in November in four colors: pink, green, black, and red. Meanwhile, the 80GB hard-drive Zune will come in a single color—black—for $250, and it'll feature a 3.2-inch screen and a touch-sensitive "Zune Pad," good for clicking or "brushing" your way to your music.

Of course, all three of the new Zunes come with Wi-Fi, but while you still can't buy tunes over the air as you can with the iPod Touch or the iPhone, you will be able to sync your music and podcasts wirelessly, over your home Wi-Fi network—very cool, and a feature that's still missing from the latest iPods. (The wireless sync feature will also be available on the 30GB Zune come November.) Microsoft has also improved on the Zune's song-sharing features: you can now share tunes with your buddies without an expiration date, and you can even hand off songs that someone else shared with you; nice, but you'll only be able to play a shared song three times—not ideal, but much better than before.

Moving on: Microsoft has apparently revamped the Zune Marketplace from top to bottom. Music videos are now available, and while there aren't any movies on the service, you will find about a million DRM-free songs (no word on pricing, or whether the DRM-free tunes come from major labels). Also on tap is a beta of Zune Social, a MySpace-type community site that'll let you create a Zune Card—a widget along the lines of an Xbox Gamercard that automatically tracks your favorite music—add friends, and share music recommendations. Hmmm.

My initial reaction to it all is...mixed. The new hardware isn't what I'd call earth-shattering, but the wireless syncing feature is enticing—and I'm always in favor of more DRM-free music. In any event, I'm reserving any final judgement until I've seen the new Zunes in action.

the touch is better? 300 bucks? no wi fi, no FM radio. The zune has FM radio. The touch is an iphone without the phone and the camera and the web for the same price.....the zune dominates

Hey 1 have you ever used a Zune?? Or just Apples? Though I will give it apple that their player is rock solid but then again it is apple and you have to deal with I Tunes. Why do you think the other makers of MP3 Players are still around? One reason....I Tunes. I have a first gen Zune and I love it though why dont they make a 80 gig version??

No. 2, You need to check your information. The touch has wifi, a full web browser, and the capability to download from Itunes via WiFi. That's without even mentioning the great multi-touch interface. I am disappointed MS didn't step it up with their Zune better than this.

#8, I traded my 30G Ipod Video for a Zune as soon as they came out and couldn't be happier. Not because of the FM, I never use it. Not because of the wireless sharing, use it and it is cool. Not even because I can personalize the background with my own art, couldn't do that with the Apple. I am happier because I don't have to put that STINKING apple software on my machine and use Itunes to get my music. I like being able to load non-DRM music and copy it between my home PC and my work PC and vice-versa. An MP3 Player is all about freedom and I have much more freedom with my Zune than with my crippled Ipod. Apple is doing the same thing with the Iphone and their exclusive AT&T, DRM, our software and updates mentality. I will not say that I would never buy another Ipod, but it is doubtful. Microsoft has built a device that embodies what music is all about, FREEDOM.

I own a Zune 1.0. This was the first MP3 player I have ever bought that forced a OS upgrade. It took forever to learn the interface. The volume control is bad. Getting podcasts and video into the thing is very difficult. Nothing is in the Zune format, so everything has to be downloaded, converted then synched. I do like the video clarity and the color. Otherwise, I'd prefer a Creative Labs or Apple product.

You can't compare the iPod touch with a Zune (or many other PMPs for that matter), it's like comparing apples to oranges. The touch is more like an iPhone without the phone, it's not really a "dedicated" MP3/media player (not to mention it only has 8GB of storage). I think the new Zunes are great, nice design/interface, and full of iPod comparible features. It might not be "revolutionary" but at least it gives consumers a another good choice besides an iPod or a Creative model when they go shopping.
