At Nintendo of Japan's Fall Press Conference, the big N confirmed the rumors of a new DS that emerged earlier in the week. Kotaku reports that the new upgrade, named the DSi, features a 640 x 480 resolution camera, an SD card slot for storing pictures and other downloadable content, "audio enhancements," larger 3.25-inch screens, and a slimmer body.

In addition to the hardware upgrades, the new DSi adds connectivity to a "DSi Shop," where users can use Nintendo points to purchase downloadable content via Wi-Fi, similar to the Wii console. Expect to see a free Web browser and a constantly growing library "DSiWare" games.

Those of you with a GameBoy Advance collection of games, there's one problem: The new DSi removes the second game slot, thus removing compatibility to the older generation of games. This is the only missing feature when compared to the DS lite and the original DS.

The DSi will hit store shelves in Japan on November 1 for ¥18,900, or about $180. Initial colors will be black and white, and will hit other worldwide markets sometime "next year."

Need one before the holidays? Expect to go through an import shop and pay a pretty hefty premium. Or, you could always use a vacation to Japan.

So, are you going to upgrade?

Taking out the gameboy advance port is a big turn off for me. Not only do I have a large collection of GBA cartridges, certain games like Pokemon Diamond/Pearl (DS) actually use the dual-slot feature in the game

Actually, calv, the current DS Lite and the regular DS does have wi-fi... This is definitely another step towards the casual market.

That seems really cool, but the only reason i dont like this one is because they remove gba compatibility. i only have gba games and no ds games.

Nice features. I like the bigger screens. They should have left the GBA slot. Some games actually use it to enhance play like Pokemon and Lunar Knights. The rumble feature will be excluded too for the Metroid games. If they had added to the current DS lite then it would be a good upgrade. I just rather wait until they come out with a second version with all that and updated graphics.

uh i think that's stupid. i wouldn't upgrade my original ds for this crap. no way. i will never change my ds for something stupid.

I would totally snatch this up...if it were cheaper and if I did not already have more than enough DSes to keep me occupied...my 4 DSes are sadly collecting dust ever since my encounter with Warcraft III...now if only Nintendo added a phone to the DS.

Plus there's other games it can't play, such as Guitar Hero: On Tour.
