The New Xbox Experience: HDD vs DVD

One of the anticipated new features in The New Xbox Experience coming in November is the ability to copy your DVD games in full to the hard drive for playback. Why is this important? Not only does it let the laser in your DVD drive rest (I've already replaced mine once), it is also expected to improve load time significantly.

Gametrailers.com (via Xbox-Scene.com) posted a video comparing the load times between a game launching off of the hard drive and a game launching off of a DVD. The game in question: Grand Theft Auto IV.

As expected, the hard drive loaded quicker than the DVD by a pretty wide margin, so you can put any speculation to rest.

Remember, to use this feature, you'll still have to insert the original copy of the game in order to launch, so don't go off trying to sell those discs after you dump them on your hard drive. You wouldn't even think about doing that, would you?

    GTA4 never takes that much time to load for me.... maybe I'm lucky.

    well i watched the video and overall the hdd just loaded maybe 15 seconds overall faster then the dvd. thats not that big of a difference for me to want to load a huge game like gta4 to a hdd. that would eventually lead to you having to buy bigger and bigger hdd just to do this for your games, its not worth it

    This will actually cause lots of video game piracy, it almost seems like you can rent a game and just put it on your HDD, unless they design the system to scan for the physical disk in the drive first. this will be an interesting addition.

    Not sure if the 15-20 seconds is really worth the extra hard drive it would take up. Just my opinion

    This option is only useful for people who have a 60GB Pro or 120GB Elite. I'm guessing M$ is trying to give people a reason to upgrade from their Arcade or 20GB Pro.

    This is just a cheap trick to buy bigger hard drives. If you still need the cd to play the games on the hdd then what's the point? Just use the dvd-rom drive, you paid for it.
