New SanDisk technology allows for 100x write speed

Solid state drives have been slow to catch on in mainstream computing, but thanks to a new file system created by SanDisk, SSDs might be too good to pass up on.

The new technology, called "ExtremeFFS" (nice name), uses some newfangled trickery to drastically improve writing speeds. Electronista says, "... ExtremeFFS uses a page-based method that no longer ties the logical location of data on the drive to its physical space. Instead, it dynamically writes and alters the position of data based on where it would be most efficient as well as the user's own habits."

I'm not sure exactly what all of that techno-mumbo-jumbo even means, but according to SanDisk, we should be seeing improved performance as well as reliability with ExtremeFFS-equipped drives. Also, random-write speeds should see a huge improvement, up to 100x the speed when compared to traditional SSDs.

No "ExtremeFFS" solid-state drives have been announced yet, but SanDisk says keep your eyes peeled in 2009.

I can't wait.

I don't really care, because typicly it has only 64 gigs. I can wait the extra 10 seconds or so for 500 GB

Of the 3 issues people care about (speed, capacity, and power) this addresses one third of the problem. Personally, I don't need 500GB - I'll settle for the the 160GB the iPod Classic used to have (before Apple shrank it to 120GB)

I think we're forgetting something. Hard drives are getting bigger and so are files every minute but the data transfer speed is falling behind. I just bought a a 500 GB SATA last week and the time it took to transfer 50GB from my old disk is very slow. BTW, my old disk is also a SATA
